I assume that Wes R & Co have spent lot of time to test the different kind of material for the steering magnet and the drag!
Wath is the different betwen 0.8 welding tread and 0.7 pianowire?
And wath about a multi kardeler conventional wire at 0,5 - 1mm?
If I am using a bit thicker wire, can I then make a more free space for the steering?
And if I, as me, building track with 3mm Sintra PVC kan I put in a small Iron rib 0,5mm x 3mm standing in a slot!
It will give more magnetic power.

Yes Wes R test a lot, and that is all about the drag, different type of material has different drag to the magnet. this can (more or less) be adjusted in the car to fit the wire you choose, but there are only one way to find out, make a test piece, put the magnet on at drag in the magnet to when it gonna loose the connection. this can either be done with small weight on the magnet or with a scale like this

I need a better precision. And I trye this way. I use a microscale weigt thing with 0,1 gram off.
I construct a justeble magnetholder and place the material under the magnet at selectiv height.

Hi Lasp, Our two tracks have different wire thickness. One has 18swg=.91mm
and the other has 20swg =.71mm. The thicker wire will give more steering
grip to the magnet but it means the cars are more likely to spin out rather than
oversteer off i.e. run straight on. The thinner wire, I think, gives a better balance
Cars will spin at lower speeds but will overshoot off the track if driven too fast into
a corner. This is better as it does not block the track for the following cars.
Also we feel that the cars can be free driven across the thinner wire more easily
when being steered back on to the track. With the heavier wire, the cars will
sometimes stop when crossing the wire.
I think that perhaps when you all build larger tracks with more speed, cars will
understeer off more and spin less.
We would use .71mm wire for our next track.

And I will test the mening of thin tread (wire) at straight and more magnetism at the corners.
I now that the Piano tread also have a re?? something that means that is take some magnetism in it.
