Targa track design

Hi all, Just been away for a week and pleased to see a number of
new posts and continued enthusiasm. Whilst sitting in the sun I decided
that a good way to promote the hobby would be to rebuild one of our two
rather similar tracks into a Targa style road circuit. The aim will be to
proove that racing on narrow village and tree lined streets would be
successfull and that reverse would enable racing without marshals. This
is important when designing a track as the length of a marshals arm is
normally an important factor!
Also, if it looks good, we should get some publicity out of it.
It has to be based on the Targa rather than the Mille Miglia because our
1970's cars raced in the Targa but the Mille finished several years earlier
of course.
So the idea is to rebuild Linford 1 which is the earlier 20swg plastered
track. The Targa circuits all featured one long straight along the sea
coast so the main straight is the only part of the track we can use.
Mountain hairpin bends are notoriously tight so I first experimented to
see what would be the minimum radius we could use. My little test
hairpin is shown in the photo and I think the 6.5" (16.5mm) is about
the minimum. So I shall use 7" to be safe.
I shall build the track corner by corner and test as I go along. I spent
over one hour just drawing the first hairpin today. The Targa corners
were often marked with straw bales and the plan is to run the 'overshoot'
outer lane through the bales and then back onto the track!
Also attached is a photo of a prototype vacuum formed lane change sheet.
This positions the wires exactly and also the l/c plate.

Hi All, Three images showing progress to date.
First shows my technical drawing for the track
layout!
Second shows my disc cutter, essential for cutting into
existing track wire.
Third shows progress so far. My wife hasn't seen much
of me lately!
The aim is to get cars running and fully test the track
before doing any scenery.

wow was my thinking too when i looked at the 3. picture. there are really some progress here, much more than we can do on 3 hours every 2. week
